While bowling had long been a pastime for founders and co-owners, Butch Lindenfelser and Mark Parnell, of River City Extreme, bowling alley ownership had not. In 1998, while bowling in their weekly league, they struck up a conversation about buying a local 24-lane bowling center. Mark, with a background in carpentry, and Butch, a former restaurant owner, had been teammates and friends for years and becoming business partners was right up their alley. In the spring of 1999, their game plan was set -- they became owners of River City Lanes in Monticello, Minnesota. Although they admit it was a learning process, they put the pieces together and filled their lanes to capacity with leagues and recreational bowlers. By 2004, the need to expand was apparent. The idea for River City Extreme, a family entertainment center, was born while Mark was reading a trade magazine article about a center in Burlington, Iowa. After a tour of the Iowa facility, he knew that was what they needed in Monticello. There was nothing else like it. A relationship was formed with Highland Bank who recommended SBAs 504 program through CMDC. CMDCs knowledge and recommendations were invaluable. They were like a big brother during the process and helped with everything from guidelines to cash flows. The entire staff is warm and responsive -- they have become our friends. The financing allowed them to build the 61,000 square foot facility that features jewel-toned couches and high-top tables that flank the twenty-four traditional bowling lanes, a private VIP suite with eight lanes, a 2,000 square foot arcade, Wonders of the World 9-hole black light mini golf, a banquet room, The Legends Lounge, a full-service pro shop, and the Foul Line Sports Bar & Grill. It is an extreme experience. River City Extreme increased jobs from 37 to 105 and are attracting thousands of patrons every month from Monticello and neighboring cities. Philosophy: If you can live with all the things that may possibly go wrong then theres nothing stopping you. Work hard and do it.
